Lakeland University has lost its President Emeritus to an auto accident. The University announced that Stephen A. Gould died on Friday at age 80, and his wife, 82-year-old Susan, a former Lakeland Registrar, is recovering from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Gould served as president of the University from 1998-2012, helping transform the main campus and expand its reach globally. Labeled as one of Lakeland’s most significant presidents, Gould’s term was marked by enormous growth including record enrollment, fundraising and growth of the endowment fund. More that $20 million in construction and upgrades were overseen during his presidency, including the construction of the Laun Center for Business and Technology and three new state-of-the-art residence halls, significant renovations to the Chase Science Center and the Nash Visitors Center, and a dramatic expansion of the Todd Wehr Athletic Center.
Current Lakeland President Beth Borgen said that “…Gould was the embodiment of everything that is Lakeland.”
Gould was named President Emeritus by the Board of Trustees upon his retirement in 2012, and he was also Professor Emeritus. At the 2019 homecoming, South Hall was renamed Stephen A. Gould Hall in recognition of his contributions.
