They’re very popular in some parts of the world, but the Sheboygan area might become increasingly familiar with the idea of “pedal cabs”, either for pleasure or just getting around.
Sheboygan already allows pedal cabs – the “Shebikin’” traveling bar is one example of what’s allowed. But the ordinance that provides for them was initially written to allow what was called “quadricycles”, requiring that they have at least four wheels on the pavement. That rules out three-wheelers, greatly restricting the types of pedal cabs that can be employed on City streets.

A direct referral to the Licensing, Hearings, and Public Safety Committee was issued by Alders Rust and La Fave that alters the language, replacing the term “quadricycle” with “pedal cab”, defining the entire category as having “fully operational pedals for propulsion entirely by human power, that has three or more wheels” – as opposed to four – “and is operated in a manner similar to a bicycle.”
Operators must still be licensed by the City and hold a valid state driver’s license, and the cabs must also include hip restraints for the passengers. All safety lighting and features you’d expect on any street-legal vehicle must also be present.
The Licensing, Hearings, and Public Safety Committee will take up the matter when it meets at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
