Recent mild weather has accelerated the thinning of ice cover on area lakes, and if that’s not enough motivation, the Wisconsin DNR is reminding ice anglers that deadlines concerning the removal of permanent ice shanties are fast approaching.
In most of Wisconsin’s inland waters, basically south of Highway 64, Sunday is the deadline to remove those shanties from the ice. Portable shanties can still be used, but they must be removed at the end of the day’s fishing.
Deadline dates vary on boundary and Great Lakes waters, and details are available from the DNR’s Fishing Regulations website. (Guide to Wisconsin’s 2024-2025 Hook and Line Fishing Regulations)
Owners that don’t take responsibility for shanty removal can be reported to the DNR’s Violation Hotline (1-800-847-8367) by either voice or text.
