The issue of homelessness in Sheboygan is going to be put under scrutiny next week. A Committee of the Whole meeting was scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Monday immediately following the Finance and Personnel Committee meeting in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
A public forum for those who want to offer their perspectives on homelessness will precede a formal presentation and discussion on the issue.
The problem is not new, according to the Social Services Director for the Sheboygan Salvation Army, Krysta Berger who was interviewed back in 2022 and told WHBL News: “There is just, in general, a homeless problem in Sheboygan, and I don’t think the citizens know that, or recognize that.”
Even four years ago in the midst of COVID, Berger said that they were taking care of as many as they could, including entire families. “In regards to families – and I can’t speak for the City as a whole – but we served ten different families which included 22 children in 2021 alone, and people can stay in our shelter for up to 90 days.”
While no action is scheduled, the information exchanged during the meeting will be used to inform the Council and committees going forward as the City works on improving the pervasive problem.
