The changing landscape of crimes committed in the City of Sheboygan was illustrated with the issuance of year-to-date statistics submitted by new Police Chief Kurt Zempel on Wednesday.
The 2024 benchmark report showed crimes against persons increased from 177 in 2023 to 238 in ‘24. There were two murders last year compared to none in ‘23. Non-Forcible Sex Offenses more than doubled from 10 to 22, and forcible offenses went from 50 in 2023 to 62 last year.
Robberies, Thefts and Burglaries all decreased in 2024, while the 19 motor vehicle thefts and two arsons were identical year-to-year. Total property crimes decreased from 679 to 634.
The Sheboygan Police Department reported improvements in offenses cleared, from 61% in 2023 to 70% last year, but while the value of property stolen more than doubled from $451,440 in 2023 to $910,960 last year, the recovery percentage took a hit, declining from 68% in ‘23 to 45% in ‘24.
