A package you didn’t order shows up at your home, with something nice inside, like a bluetooth speaker or jewelry. Unfortunately, those packages can also contain something not so nice that could steal your personal information.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is reporting several instances of this so-called “brushing scam”, and it works like this: You get an unexpected package, addressed to you, but with no sender ID. There’s a QR code included on information inside the package with instructions to scan it to discover who sent the gift. But anyone who does that could be surrendering all the personal information contained on the phone to the scammer, and that can include credit card numbers and any other sensitive information stored there.
The only thing you can do wrong here is to scan that code. The law says that any package you receive without ordering belongs to you, and you can keep whatever the package contained…or throw it away…that’s up to you. But it’s also up to you to be aware of this scam, and to throw away or shred that code before someone else makes a mistake and falls victim to the scam.
