UNDATED (WSAU) – Jacob Blake’s father says his son is paralyzed after being shot by police in Kenosha.
The father, whose name is also Jacob Blake, said in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, that his son cannot move below the waist, and was shot eight times. It’s unknown if the paralysis is permanent. The father is traveling from North Carolina to Wisconsin to be with his son.
Blake was airlifted to Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee. Family members say he was out of surgery Monday and is in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The shooting was recorded on the cellphones of several onlookers. It appears as though police used a taser on Blake, only to have him get up and walk towards his car. The cellphone video shows police officers, with guns drawn, following Blake as he walked towards his car. One of the officers grabbed the back of his shirt as he reached inside the driver’s side door. That’s when the shots rang out.
The shooting is under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The officers involved are on administrative leave.
