A 135-year-old building in downtown Plymouth is about to undergo a transformation that preserves its unique features in what is the single largest private investment ever made in the Plymouth Historic District.
After purchasing the 19th-century H.C. Laack building and the Laack Hotel on the southwest corner of Mill and Stafford Streets earlier this year, the Gentine family has revealed plans for what will become the “Laack Block”, a 35-room boutique hotel, restaurant, bar and banquet facility. Future plans could add a rooftop bar and a spa as well.
In making the announcement, family spokesperson Louie Gentine said that the family “…has been working closely with the City of Plymouth and are thankful to have its support for a project that shows our commitment and appreciation for our community.” He continued, “Our hope is that this development will spur additional investment in downtown Plymouth and be a benefit to not only the place we call home, but to Sheboygan County as well.”
The family has partnered with preservation experts from the Wisconsin Historical Society in preparing the designs. Preparation for construction and restoration will begin within the next few weeks as select walls and ceilings in the former 52 Stafford building will be removed. Once the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service approve the final plans, which is expected early next year, then construction will begin, with completion in the spring of 2026.
