We all knew it couldn’t last forever, and now the death knell is sounding for our extended mild autumn. Its demise comes as Old Man Winter settles in with the promise of a messy dose of slippery snow.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of eastern Wisconsin from Door County to the Illinois border, in effect from 6 a.m. until noon on Thursday. You might begin seeing scattered snow showers as early as this afternoon, and vigorous downbursts could be seen but aren’t expected to affect roads this afternoon and evening. The main event, though, will be hard to miss if forecasters have it right.
Bursts of wet, slushy snow are expected to move in from north to south tomorrow morning, reducing visibility and making for slippery roadways. 2-3 inch accumulations are expected near the lake, and 4 or more inches can’t be ruled out in the Kettle Moraine. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will likely make it more difficult to hold the road, but with the wet, heavy nature of the snow, blowing and drifting aren’t expected.
This first winter weather event will be short-lived, with rain and 40-degree temperatures helping to wash away the mess by midday. Until then, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready, and prepare for slow, careful travel tomorrow morning.
