Record-low unemployment rates were recorded in nine Wisconsin counties during September according to data released Wednesday by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Door, Langlade, Oconto, Pepin, Rock and Sawyer Counties experienced unemployment rates as low as 1.9 percent, and no higher than 2.7% for the first time.
As a state, Wisconsin’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate remained at 2.9%, which is 1.2 percentage points below the national rate of 4.1%. Also, the state’s labor force participation rate increased to 65.6 percent in September, while the national rate stayed at 62.7%. Non-farm jobs in Wisconsin reached historic highs in September, increasing by 30,800 over the year to a total of 3,044,800 jobs.
In figures not seasonally-adjusted, the Sheboygan Metropolitan Area saw a loss of 700 in its active workforce from August to September this year, with 63,400 total employed last month. Still, that’s a growth of 200 compared to September, 2023. Once seasonally-adjusted, the workforce of 63,600 grew by 100 month-over-month, and was 600 greater than a year ago.
As for the unemployment rate – again not seasonally-adjusted – the Sheboygan Metro area saw 2.2 percent unemployment in September, a drop of one-tenth of one-percent for the month, and three-tenths lower than the previous year.
The City of Sheboygan experienced a two-tenths of a percent drop in unemployment since August, with September’s 2.3 percent coming in point-six percent lower than 2023. Sheboygan ranks as having the eighth-lowest unemployment rate in Wisconsin, a status shared with the Cities of Eau Claire, Menomonee Falls, Waukesha and Wauwatosa. That’s only point-two percent above the lowest rate that’s shared by Madison, Fitchburg and Sun Prairie.
Sheboygan County’s unemployment rate for September came in at 2.2%, one-tenth lower than August, and three-tenths lower than September of 2023. Sheboygan County shared the 12th-lowest unemployment rate in Wisconsin along with Washington, Richland, Outagamie, Marathon, and Eau Clair Counties.
