Another boost in restoring Sheboygan’s urban forest was announced on Friday. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has named Sheboygan as a recipient of an Urban Forestry Catastrophic Storm Grant to be used in addressing damage and recovery from extreme storm events that took place between June 21-25 this year. In Sheboygan, that would involve the June 25th storm that downed multiple trees and caused an overflow at the Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, closing a portion of Lakeview Park. Catastrophic Storm Damage is defined as damage to urban forests caused by snow, ice, hail, wind or tornado.
The DNR did not offer a breakdown of awards by recipient, but the $139,920 was divided in amounts ranging from $4,000 to $50,000 among the Town of Delavan, the Cities of Lacrosse, Middleton, Phillips, Sheboygan and Watertown, the Village of Williams Bay, and one nonprofit: Friends of Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy.
The grant does not require a dollar-for-dollar match. Subsequent to the declaration, the DNR’s Urban Forestry program allocated 20% of its available annual funds to aid communities, nonprofits and tribes, as directed by law.
