The appearance of downtown Sheboygan will soon be changing once again as a former bank building is slated to be demolished later this year. In order to do that, though, a nagging 20th-century problem has to be resolved.
The City of Sheboygan purchased the former Wells Fargo Bank building on the corner of 7th and Wisconsin Avenue earlier this year with the intention of razing the building and developing the property for future use. But the structure, built in 1956, was inspected and found to have significant amounts of both lead-based paint, and asbestos which is a proven carcinogen. Before the building can be razed, those materials have to be removed and properly disposed of, and of three companies responding to a request for bids Advanced Asbestos Removal of Pickett, Wisconsin was chosen for the job at a cost of $69,875.00. Another $10,000 was advised to have in reserve in case more materials exist than initially discovered.
To cover the contract and set the stage for demolition later this year, the Finance and Personnel Committee will take up a direct referral proposal to draw the nearly $80,000 in funds when they meet on Monday evening.
