The Wisconsin DOT is stopping road work – temporarily – to allow Labor Day travelers the best chance for smooth travel, but it’s still up to drivers to focus on safety this weekend. Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson, who made the announcement, said, “Let’s continue to work together to make our roads safer and avoid bad driving habits.” Thompson said that involves following posted speed limits, buckling up, and putting the phone down.
Triple-A says peak travel will happen between 1 and 7:30 p.m. today, from 2 until 6 p.m. on Friday, and then between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday.
While road work will be paused, work zones can still mean fewer available lanes of travel and navigating construction barriers and barrels. In Eastern Wisconsin I-41 has major work underway in Outagamie and Winnebago Counties, while I-43 has numerous lane and ramp closures in Ozaukee and Milwaukee Counties, and that’s just a sample so before a trip it’s best to check your route on the Wisconsin 511 website that’s linked to this story on WHBL.com.
The DOT added that all Wisconsin rest areas are open, extra patrols are on the road during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, and the DOT’s Safety Patrol sponsored by Geico offers limited roadside assistance to drivers in need in select coverage areas statewide.
