SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The Sheboygan County Division of Public Health reported on Wednesday that only 5 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been recorded within the county since Tuesday but, at the same time, advised that short supplies of testing elements may result in lower positive numbers. The shortage of supplies here comes as demand increases in high-impact areas of the nation that require priority access to the limited resources. The DPH notes that having a lower number of new positives may not mean that the spread of COIVD-19 is slowing, but rather that this could be the product of fewer overall tests. The ratio of positive test results as a percentage of all tests returned in the past 24-hours then becomes critical to measuring the incidence of the disease. That being the case, the 135 negative results received since Tuesday indicate a positive return rate of 3.57%, an increase over the 2% recorded Tuesday when 10 more (twice as many) positive returns were received among a total of 496 tests – over 3 times the number as Wednesday’s totals. With 17 recoveries, the active case load in Sheboygan County is now 112, and 6 of those persons require hospital treatment of their symptoms. 817 Sheboygan County residents have now come down with the disease, and 8 of those have died as a result.
Statewide, 5 more persons have died from COVID-19 infections, raising the state death toll to 1,011. 9,924 persons have received their test results since Tuesday. 478 of those were positive, and 9,446 were negative, yielding a 4.8% positive rate. 33 more persons entered hospitals for treatment, and of the 364 patients receiving that treatment, 111 are in ICU’s and 342 persons overall are on ventilators.
