What’s believed to be a large-scale deer poaching scheme has been operating nearby, and officials in the counties involved are moving to shut it down. Attention was drawn when a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy acted on a tip and uncovered the operation. The Wisconsin DNR was contacted and a joint investigation began. What they uncovered involves an area of some 200 square miles over Fond du Lac, Dodge and Washington Counties, generally bounded by Campbellsport, Waucousta, Lomira, Theresa, West Bend and Kewaskum.
Information from the public is now being sought to build the case; specifically hearing gunshots in overnight hours, seeing suspicious vehicles shining deer, stopping in the roadway or shooting from vehicles. Deer carcasses of bucks have had the head removed while does are left fully intact, and anyone seeing this, or finding live or deceased deer with bullet wounds outside of hunting season, is asked to report the find.
