The Label from Boar's Head Liverwurst, the First of 71 Products Recalled by the USDA
A USDA recall of popular deli meats made under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names has been expanded. The recall, due to the discovery of the Listeria bacteria in Liverwurst product on July 26th, was expanded on Tuesday to include 71 products produced between May 10th and July 29th. The items include meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations. The products have “sell by” dates ranging from 29-JUL-2024 to 17-OCT-2024, and retailer products bear the establishment number “EST.12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.
As of Wednesday morning 34 illnesses and 2 deaths were reported, with only 1 person avoiding hospitalization. One illness was reported so far in Wisconsin. The Food Inspection Service is recommending cleaning and sanitizing of all food and non-food surfaces at retail delis and to discard any open meats and cheeses. Consumers that purchased the products should clean refrigerators thoroughly to prevent the risk of cross-contamination, and throw away or return products to the place of purchase.
