If you plan on driving the “I-43 speedway”…or any other highway on Wednesday…you may want to keep a closer eye than usual on your speedometer. That’s the advice from multiple state and local law enforcement agencies as a national campaign to bring awareness to the dangers of speeding takes place on July 31st.
Speed Awareness Day is an annual event to educate the public on a pervasive problem. The main issue is the increased danger that accompanies increasing speed on roadways. According to national statistics more than 12,000 people were killed in speed-related crashes in 2022, and in Wisconsin alone last year, 137 people died due to reckless driving – which usually involves speeding. And the age range most likely to be involved in speed-related fatalities is 18-24 years old – comprising 24% of drivers last year – with males involved more often than females.
Of course, awareness is more crucial on the road – which is why you’re also more likely to encounter a law enforcement officer committed to raising YOUR awareness of speeding on the roadways tomorrow, making Wednesday a good day to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to get to your destination…without speeding.
