Protecting against flooding in Ozaukee County and restoring the habitat for Great Lakes fish populations is getting a multimillion dollar boost from Washington. Senator Tammy Baldwin announced on Thursday that the feds are directing $3.2 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act towards the large-scale stream restoration project that will reconnect the Lake Michigan tributary, Sucker Creek, to nearby wetlands and floodplains. That will directly benefit Great Lakes fish species by restoring areas crucial for spawning and raising the fish, as well as improving the protection against more frequent and extreme flood events.
The funding program is one of several Senator Baldwin said is being directed to the Great Lakes ecosystem that also includes an additional $1 billion in the Great Lakes to clean up and restore severely degraded sites.
