A project to establish apartments on Sheboygan’s so-called “Kite Beach” has been given an initial nod of approval at the committee level. Sheboygan’s Plan Commission gave the thumbs-up last week to general and specific plans to develop the “Malibu Apartments” on a now-empty plot of land on South 7th Street between Georgia and Clara Avenues. Besides the apartments offering lakefront living, the project could potentially include waterfront commercial restaurant space at the end of Clara Avenue.
The developer noted that the project is complex, due in part to contaminated and inadequate subsoils. Mitigation of that was not part of the plans submitted. The eventual final Committee approval of the 157-unit apartment complex, named as an homage to Sheboygan’s title of the “Malibu of the Midwest”, is contingent upon meeting numerous requirements before moving forward to the full Council for consideration.
