Cold weather is better-known for causing bad driving conditions, but hot summer weather comes with its own unique hazards that drivers need to be aware of. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is advising motorists to be on the lookout for buckling pavement as forecasters predict the first stretch of hot weather in the Badger State.
The problem happens when pavement, which is designed to expand and contract with hotter, then colder temperatures, is pushed beyond limits by excessive heat. This forces blocks of concrete to push against each other, sometimes buckling in the process. That can cause dangerous road conditions without notice, and drivers are being advised to slow down, buckle up and focus full attention on the roadway when temperatures bake the pavement.
The DOT says a check with their 511 website will let drivers know in advance of any known problem areas, and if you encounter buckled pavement, pull over and call 911 immediately so repair crews can be sent. And one more reminder from the DOT – please slow down and keep those crews safe as they repair the roadway.
