Brisk westerly winds and arctic cold are combining to produce dangerous windchills across Wisconsin and Sheboygan County, and the National Weather Service is maintaining its Wind Chill Advisory until 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Although bitter cold will rule continuously, the most likely time for encountering that combination of winds and temperatures that can freeze exposed skin in short order will be between 9 p.m. on Monday until 9 a.m. on Wednesday. In Sheboygan County, the coldest wind chill readings during that time are expected to be mostly between 24 and 31 below zero, the product of actual temperatures near zero, while winds pick up to 15-20 miles and hour, gusting to 30 from the west-southwest.
In the City of Sheboygan, actual Tuesday morning temperatures are expected to start around 8 below zero with wind chills of -15 to -25. Chill values likely recover only slightly during the day and return to the minus 20s overnight Tuesday. As of now, even with warming temperatures, wind chill values could stay below zero until Sunday morning.
The Sheboygan County Warming Center, operated by a group of inter-denominational churches, organizations and friends, is an overnight shelter for any adults during the cold winter months. The shelter is hosted by Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church at 828 New Jersey Avenue in Sheboygan.
Guests should arrive between 7 and 7:45 p.m., after which a police referral may be required for admittance, and anyone leaving after 7:45 p.m. won’t be allowed to re-enter.
