A fire struck in the heart of downtown Sheboygan Wednesday morning, with 8 Sheboygan Fire Department units responding.
Assistant Chief Michael Lubbert said that the first Engine arrived in under 2 minutes from the time the call, which was received at 9:04 a.m. The fire, described as an apartment fire in the mostly public 1000 block of North 8th Street – with Fountain Park on the west side and the Sheboygan County Human Services Building on the east – was producing heavy smoke when crews arrived. Those first on the scene were able to locate the fire and quickly put it out with a water extinguisher. The lone occupant at the time had been accounted for, and a search by additional SFD crews confirmed that nobody else was there. Firefighters were still on the scene at 10:30 this morning, ventilating the building and checking for hot spots. There were no injuries sustained.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and losses are estimated at around $8,000. The SFD reminds all residents to check their smoke detectors, and to have an exit plan in their home or apartment.
