A Halloween snowstorm provided more tricks than treats in the Sheboygan area as much of southern Wisconsin experienced its first measurable snow of the season.
Activity moved into the county between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and by noon roads were beginning to get slippery. But the main event waited until the afternoon rush hour which, on this particular day, also sees sidewalks and crosswalks filled with thousands of costumed youngsters begging for sweets. Snow fell vigorously, boosted by Lake Michigan, and the combination of slick surfaces, low visibility, and cold, wet, wind-driven snow prompted Sheboygan City officials to attempt a postponement of trick-or-treating until Wednesday.
The outcry from the public was swift and loud, and the County Emergency Management’s 911 system was turned into a sounding board by many to express their objections. The Dispatch Center responded with a plea to the public to not call the system that was already busy handling real emergencies that resulted from the wintry weather. Among those emergencies were the several dozen cars that went into county ditches due to the snowy roads. Fortunately there were no serious accidents.
The City issued an announcement saying that “We understand the disappointment this may bring, but we want everyone to stay safe and dry during this Halloween season. We encourage you to celebrate indoors, enjoy some spooky movies, and have a cozy night with your loved ones. Trick or Treating will be rescheduled for November 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
In other words, don’t count on that extra bounty of sweets until the last visitors stop at the door and the lights are turned out tonight.
