The Green Bay Packers have signed free agent running back James Robinson to the practice squad after working out the 4th year veteran a couple of weeks ago. Robinson burst onto the NFL scene in 2020 as an undrafted rookie out of Illinois State, rushing for over 1000 yards for the Jacksonville Jaguars. That included topping 100 yards against the Pack in a Green Bay victory at Lambeau Field in November. His 1414 total yards from scrimmage remains a record for a first year, undrafted player. An Achilles tendon injury in year two derailed his fast start, eventually getting traded to the New York Jets before last season. He has also spent time with the New England Patriots and New York Giants. Robinson may provide an experienced backup behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon along with rookie free agent Emmanuel Wilson. Jones is still mending from a nagging hamstring injury that occurred on opening day against Chicago. After missing a couple of games he tried to return but re-injured it. Jones did take part in team drills on Monday and is expected to increase his practice workload as the team begins preparing for the Denver Broncos on Wednesday. With Jones sidelined, Patrick Taylor was called up from the practice squad to the game day roster three times but saw minimal action before getting released last week.
The Packers also made a cornerback swap on the practice squad Tuesday, signing rookie free agent Anthony Johnson. Undrafted out of Virginia, Johnson was with the New Orleans Saints during training camp before getting cut. To make room for Johnson, the Packers released defensive back Kiondre Thomas from the practice squad.
