The Dairy Innovation Hub will hold its fourth annual Dairy Summit conference on November 15, hosted by UW–Platteville.
Formatted for a general audience, the Summit features the Hub’s newest projects. Anyone unable to attend in person can participate through a live virtual option. Sessions will also be recorded and posted to YouTube after the event.
Hub events are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.
In addition to research presentations, there will be two panel sessions to stimulate ideas and discussion:
Two UW–Platteville faculty will be joined by two local farmers who will share their experience hosting research trials on their farms. Hal Evensen, a professor of engineering physics, has partnered with Chris Wilson, from Wilson Organic Farm in Cuba City, Wis. on a virtual fencing project to help ease the burden of moving fence for graziers. Ryan Pralle, an assistant professor in the School of Agriculture, has partnered with Andy Buttles from Stone-Front Farm in Lancaster, Wis. using a newly developed blood-based serological biomarker panel to predict bovine fatty liver syndrome. Evensen and Pralle with provide an overview of their research projects, and Wilson and Buttles will share their perspective and experience participating in research. This work demonstrates the Hub’s efforts to engage with local communities and is an avenue to share what it’s like hosting on-farm research trials.
A panel of state leaders will reflect on four years of the Dairy Innovation Hub and the state’s investment in research to grow Wisconsin dairy. Sen. Howard Marklein, Rep. Travis Tranel, and Rep. Dave Considine were early champions of the 2019 legislation that created the Hub and will share what future success looks like from their perspective.
Finishing out the day will be three tour options showcasing Hub investments at UW–Platteville including Sesquicentennial Hall, multiple lab spaces in Russell Hall, and Pioneer Farm.

In just four years, this unique initiative has funded more than 200 research and outreach projects across three campuses and four priority areas.
The Dairy Innovation Hub, is supported by a $7.8M annual state investment to drive research and development across the UW–Madison, UW–Platteville, and UW–River Falls campuses, ensuring that Wisconsin’s $45.6 billion dairy community remains a global pacesetter in producing nutritious dairy products. This is all accomplished with a keen focus on economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
