MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — The number of wildfires in Wisconsin has grown significantly in 2023.
The number in the state this year stood at 893 as of Wednesday. That’s compared to 729 in 2022.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the uptick in the fires can be attributed to the lengthy drought in the state.
In addition to the number of wildfires, the span of those fires has widened greatly. As of Wednesday, wildfires have consumed 4,366 acres of Wisconsin land in 2023 compared to 726 acres consumed at this time last year.
The DNR encourages people to see if a burn ban has been declared before engaging in any activity involving fire.
