The rains that fell on Monday almost made up for a deficit that’s been in place for much of the year in Sheboygan County.
The total falling at the Sheboygan County Airport, which the National Weather Service considers the official local point-of-record, was 1.78 inches, nearly erasing the deficit that stood at 2 inches before the storm. Other parts of the county did receive more according to radar estimates which aren’t exact, but give a very good idea. Much of the county likely received between 2-1/2 and 3 inches of rain, with isolated spots getting even more.
As for being a drought-buster, that call will be made by the National Weather Service once the rainfall can be considered along with other measures such as soil moisture, with results coming in on Thursday. And while there’s no question that the substantial rains came just in time for many worried about their crops and gardens, long-range forecasts suggests that we’ll likely need more events like Monday’s in order to make a real impact on the ongoing drought.
