MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Governor Tony Evers signed a Republican-authored bill on Wednesday that would overhaul how elementary reading classes are taught.
That bill would provide $50 million to create a new office to help teachers switch to a phonics based reading program in kindergarten through 3rd grade.
That bill had been vetoed in previous sessions for not providing funding, and was nearly vetoed this session for requiring students to be held back a grade if they test poorly, but that was changed during debate in the Legislature.
