A piece of land donated to the City of Sheboygan will observe its 40th anniversary as an environmental park later this month.
The Ellwood H. May Environmental Park, better known as “Maywood”, will be celebrated from 1 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29th. The free, open-house style event will feature several family-friendly activities that highlight the park and its history. Those attending can visit different nature activity stations to explore fishing, animal tracking, nature coloring, self-guided nature bingo and more.
Longtime former director Dave Kuckuk will also be on hand to lead two hikes to discover the “Secret Wonders of Maywood where guests will be led to three locations that reveal some of the park’s lesser-known features.
Maywood began as a donation of 120 acres of land from Ellwood and Mary May in 1983. The park expanded by another 15 acres in time, with six unique habitats restored or installed by the staff and volunteers over the following years. The park now hosts a prairie, pine forest, mixed hardwood/maple forest, ponds, wetlands and the Pigeon River as well as an Ecology Center, hiking and walking trails, interpretive signage, a Hummingbird Garden, an Arboretum, and a rain garden.
People can enjoy the anniversary event for free, but registration is requested and donations are welcome and those registering by Thursday the 27th will be eligible for prize drawings.
