GREEN BAY, (WTAQ-WLUK) – Republicans gathered at the KI Convention Center in downtown Green Bay Saturday for the party’s state convention.
Democrats gathered virtually last month for their state convention. It was originally supposed to be held at a Wisconsin Dells convention center.
Looking to rally the base ahead of the big November election, Wisconsin Republicans didn’t let the ongoing coronavirus pandemic stop them from gathering in-person.
“It’s the difference between talking to someone on the phone and seeing them face to face,” said Rep. Glenn Grothman of the 6th Congressional District.
“Wouldn’t you rather see your children or parents in their house rather than on some Skype? I think particularly in a huge area, room, I think people did a very good job.”
A majority of people were not wearing masks, something Democrats were quick to point out on social media, dubbing the event as the COVID convention.
“It’s grossly irresponsible and Wisconsinites recognize that whether the Republicans here do or not,” said Philip Shulman, the director of Trump Rapid Response for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
Republicans used their platform to bash and blame China for the spread of the virus. They also talked about what they’ve accomplished despite Tony Evers, a Democrat, being governor.
The main rallying point, however, was re-electing President Donald Trump.
“This is the stark contrast we will see going into November: a party that blames America first versus a party and a President that puts America first,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher of the 8th Congressional District.
“The fact they’re putting politics first, before people’s lives, tells you everything you need to know about them,” said Shulman.
Republicans report 322 people were at Saturday’s convention.
Democrats were supposed to hold their state convention last month at a Wisconsin Dells convention center.
