MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Republican lawmakers continue to make a case to cut funding for diversity, equity and inclusion in the UW System.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu says we shouldn’t be looking at race, color, or gender.
“It should be on their capabilities and we should be a colorblind society. Whether you’re a white male or a black male or a Indian woman — whatever we’re looking to hire to have opportunities, it should be regardless of color, regardless of gender, and everybody should have that same opportunity,” said LeMahieu.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says Republicans are “rock solid” on the cuts. Originally he proposed a $32 million cut, but Vos said Thursday that the cuts could be deeper.
Governor Tony Evers said the cuts would be “disastrous” for the U-W system and he will not sign a budget that includes them.
