MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — The UW System’s budget request is getting trimmed by $32 million.
The legislature’s Republican dominated Joint Finance Committee took the action on Tuesday. The UW System had asked for an increase of nearly $436 million in state funding for the next two year budget cycle, while Governor Tony Evers had proposed about $300 million more.
The reduction reflects the amount UW had designated for DEI programs; diversity, equity and inclusion.
The budget panel’s action follows Republican’s recent refusal to fund the UW’s priority project — a new engineering building on the Madison campus.
Governor Tony Evers says the cuts will be “disastrous” for the UW System.
