Mrs. Verna H. Groene, age 98, passed away Sunday evening, March 4, 2018 at Prairie Crossing in Sheboygan Falls, her home of the last 10 months.
Verna was born September 13, 1919 in Howards Grove, the daughter of Oscar and Anna (nee Werthmann) Heusterberg. She graduated from Howards Grove High School in 1937. On January 18, 1947, she was united in marriage with Roland Groene and moved into his family farm in rural Sheboygan Falls.
Verna was a long-time member of Saron UCC where she had been active with the Lady’s Aid. She appreciated the quiet, simple, rural life on the farm, and continued to work in her flower beds into her 90’s. Hers was a life well lived, and a job well done.
Verna is survived by her daughter Susan (Thomas) Hailer of Sheboygan Falls, daughter-in-law Nancy Groene of Savage, MN, grandchildren Sara (fiancé Mike Alovera) and Matthew Groene, sisters Evelyn Sprenger and Adela Damrow, both of Howards Grove, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roland, son Charles, brother Fred (Esther) Heusterberg, sister Ruby (Roland) Schomberg and brothers-in-law Lester Sprenger and Adrian Damrow .
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30AM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Saron United Church of Christ, W3830 Cty Hwy J in the town of Sheboygan Falls. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday from 10:00-11:30AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Saron UCC Memorial Fund.
