Helen Elizabeth (Johnson) Schulz,
94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 29, 2018 surrounded by beloved
family. Helen knew “that in all things God works for the good of those who love
him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). She lived a
full life of Christian love and of faithful service.
Cherished mother to four and
grandmother to many, Helen was born October 6, 1923 to George and Eva (Phipps)
Johnson in the Town of Greenbush. After graduating from Plymouth High School in
1941 and Normal School in 1943, Helen married Albert Schulz on April 22, 1944
at Zion Lutheran Church in Glenbeulah. Together, the two established a family
farm in the Town of Greenbush on which to raise their daughters, Ratchel,
Deborah, Rebecca, and Leah.
Intermittently over the next
seventeen years while also growing her family, Helen taught at Spring Farm,
South Prairie, Dye Road, State Road, and Parnell schools. Early in her teaching
career, Helen led a one-room schoolhouse where she would build her own fires
and where students were without running water. She educated various grades at
one time within the school and impressed her students with kickball skills
outside of it. While Helen retired from teaching in 1958 after the birth of her
last child, she never slowed in her care for and involvement in her community.
Helen was an active member in the Greenbush American Legion Auxiliary Post
#261. She volunteered at Rocky Knoll as a Bible Class teacher and Country Store
worker. She assisted at the Plymouth Historical Society, the Sheboygan County
Historical Society, the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center, and the
Plymouth Chapter #2019 of AARP. Helen was a dedicated member of Friends of
Greenbush and the Zion Lutheran Church Ladies Aid. Helen wrote and published
four books about the history of one-room school houses in Sheboygan County and
regularly contributed to the
Elkhart Lake Depot Dispatch
. Even as her
body slowed in more recent years, Helen still remained active by building
jigsaw puzzles, competing in majhong, participating in book clubs, and more at
Cedar Bay Assisted Living.
In heaven, Helen was greeted by her
husband, Albert Schulz; her parents, George and Eva Johnson; her sister, Marian
Lehmann; her brother, Llyod “Tiny” Johnson; her son-in-law, Wayne Heusterberg,
and many other special family and friends. Helen’s remaining legacy here on
earth includes: daughters Ratchel (Schulz) Miske, Deborah (Schulz) Krahn,
Rebecca (Schulz) Dippel, and Leah (Schulz) Heusterberg; sons-in-law Curtis
Miske, Spencer Krahn, and Randall Dippel; grandchildren, Tami (Miske) and Jerry
Vater, Todd and Tonia Miske, Tonia Jean Miske, Tina (Miske) and Robert Ernst,
Chad and Carrie Krahn, Troy and Kayla Krahn, Derrik and Stacy Dippel, Brandon
Dippel, Amy (Heusterberg-) and Lucas Richards, Bradley and Brianna Heusterberg;
great grandchildren Jaclyn Vater, Tyler Vater, Paige Miske, Trevor Miske,
Elizabeth Miske, Cruz and Lechole Miske, Austin Ernst, Alex Ernst, Dylan Ernst,
Alyssa Krahn, Hunter Krahn, Jeremiah Krahn, Cade Dippel, Colton Dippel, Cael
Richards, and Evelyn Richards; great, great grandchildren Alizea Matzdorf,
Damian Miske, Harmony Miske, Bently Schott-Miske, and Rhett Vater;
sister-in-law Alice Johnson; and other beloved family and friends.
Helen’s family would like to thank
the staff and residents in the Cedar Bay community in Elkhart Lake for many
years of outstanding and compassionate care. They also offer appreciation to
the staff of Sheboygan Health Services for the services they gave to Helen at
the end of her earthly life. Heartfelt gratitude additionally goes to
Kelly Dawson and the staff of Aurora Palliative Care and Aurora Hospice Care.
Visitation for Helen Schulz will take place at Zion Lutheran
Church in Glenbeulah (200 Main Street) on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 1:00 –
4:00 P.M.Funeral Service will be immediately
following at 4:00 P.M. Burial will be in
the Greenbush Cemetery.
