If you’re looking for a job, the market is in your favor, unlike that of employers who struggle to fill empty spots in the workforce. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development announced April unemployment data on Wednesday, showing that the Metro Area, City and County of Sheboygan statistics remain at or near record lows.
The Sheboygan Metropolitan area employed 62,400 persons in April, 600 more than in March and an increase of 1,300 compared with April last year. Applying seasonal adjustment, there was no net change since March and an increase of 1,200 over last year. The unemployment rate last month was 1.7%, down one-tenth since March and nearly 1/2 percent (-0.4%) lower year-to-date. Preliminary April 2023 unemployment rates decreased in all 12 Wisconsin metro areas over the month. Over the year, all 12 Wisconsin metro areas had rate decreases.
The City of Sheboygan saw a 1-tenth of 1 percent uptick in unemployment compared to March, recording a 1.9% rate this April. That’s down 0.7% compared to last year’s 2.6% April rate. Sheboygan was among seven of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities sharing the 8th lowest rate, down from March’s 5th place ranking. Preliminary April 2023 unemployment rates decreased or stayed the same in 28 of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities over the month. Compared with April of ‘22, 34 Wisconsin cities had unemployment rates decrease or stay the same. Manitowoc, at 2.2%, experienced its lowest rate ever recorded.
County-wise, Sheboygan was among four out of Wisconsin’s 72 counties sharing the 3rd lowest rate with 1.7% in April. That’s down from 1.8% in March, and down 1/2 of one percent compared with April of ‘22. Statewide, preliminary April 2023 unemployment rates show over-the-month unemployment rates declined or remained unchanged in 67 counties, with 60 counties reaching a new record low unemployment rate for April, and 19 reaching or tying their lowest rate on record.
