Elaine Elizabeth Shaffer, age 96, passed away peacefully May 22, 2023, at Songbird Pond
Assisted Living in Plymouth.
She was born October 27, 1926, in Manitowoc, a daughter of the late Ottmar and Elizabeth
(Altergott) Schadewald. Elaine attended Manitowoc public schools graduating from Lincoln
High School in 1944, after which the family moved to Sheboygan.
On September 14, 1946, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Kenneth
Shaffer, and celebrated 68 years together. They moved to Branch, WI, where their five children
were born. In 1965, they bought a farm in rural Plymouth and raised horses and beef cattle.
Kenneth passed away on March 22, 2014 and she moved to Briarwood Cottages for 8 years.
Elaine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved spending
time with her family. She liked gardening, cooking, canning, bowling, reading, playing cards,
puzzles and especially playing Scrabble. She enjoyed going to Generations to exercise and play
cards. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth.
Elaine is survived by her 3 children, Gail (Jim) Wagner, David (Susan) Shaffer and Jill Shaffer
(Michael Plonske). Daughters-in-law, Jean Shaffer and Laura Shaffer. Sisters- in- law, Barbara
Schadewald and Joanne Bartelme. Grandchildren, Jennifer (Gene) Smithers, Chris Shaffer, Amy
(Brett) Armstrong, Hope (Josh) Sheaffer, Kurt (Carol) Wagner, Wendy (Andrew) Burch,
Michael (Katrin) Roberts, Brad Roberts and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, sons Wayne Shaffer, Gary Shaffer,
daughter- in -law Donna Shaffer, sister Clarice Nicol, brother Dale Schadewald, Brothers- in-
law Lee Nicol and Robert Bartelme and two infant granddaughters.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday (May 27, 2023) at the Suchon Funeral Home in
Plymouth. Visitation will take place from 10:00-11:00am, with a service to follow at 11:00am.
Rev. James Hoppert, Pastor of Salem UCC, will officiate and inurnment will be at the Branch
Evergreen Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sharon Richardson's Community Hospice and
Songbird Pond for all their care and compassion.
