Arvin Jay “Ike” Mentink, 95, of Oostburg went to be with his Lord on Thursday night,
November 20, 2018 at Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls.
Ike was born on May 30, 1923 in Oostburg, the son of the late Garrett and Janet (Huibregtse)
Mentink. Ike graduated from Oostburg High School in 1941 and then served in the US Navy as a
machinist mate on a landing craft ship in the South Pacific during World War II from 1943-46.
On September 11, 1946 he married Helen G. Soerens in Oostburg. Helen preceded him in death
on March 19, 2007 following 60 years of marriage. After the war he worked for Kool Kitchen
and Stokdyk Trucking. He proudly worked for the Sheboygan County Highway Dept. for 42
years until his retirement in 1985.
Ike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a lifelong member
of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where he had served as a deacon, elder,
Sunday school teacher, usher and was part of the Men’s Club. During his retirement he enjoyed
traveling to all areas of the United States with his dear wife, Helen. Ike also enjoyed camping,
golf, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s activities, Sunday morning coffee time after
church with his family and family holiday events.
Ike is survived by four sons, Dean (Sally), Gary (Sherrie), Bruce (Judy), and Craig (LuAnn)
Mentink, all of Oostburg; eight grandchildren, Michael (Patty) Mentink, Joel (Erin) Mentink,
Paul (Nicole) Mentink, Michelle (Bart) Epping, Brian (Mary) Mentink, Jeff (Jessie) Mentink,
Tracy (Shawn) Richards, and Kevin (Katie) Mentink; a granddaughter-in-law, Danielle (George)
Mentink-Mladenov; a grandson-in-law, Joel Krier; 34 great grandchildren, Daniel, Nicholas and
Mary Mentink, Sawyer and Macey Mentink, Brett, Billy, and Bradley Mentink, Ellianna and
Mackenna Epping, Isaiah, Elijah, Malachi and Melchizadec Mentink, Kylee, Ian, and Liam
Richards, Devyn, Gavyn, Bradyn and Jordyn Mentink, Ava, Nola and Isaac Krier, Niya and Asia
Mentink, Jude, Cecilia, Angelina, Vera and Franklin Mladenov, Connor, Quinn and Grayson
Mentink, three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Mentink, Faye Mentink, and LaVerne Nyenhuis, all of
Oostburg.
Ike was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; a grandson, Jason Mentink; a granddaughter, Karri
Krier; one sister, Lois Mentink; and three brothers, Meryl, Norman and Robert (Barbara)
Mentink; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral to celebrate Ike’s life will take place at the First Christian Reformed Church in
Oostburg on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Drew Zylstra officiating.
Burial and Military Honors will follow at the Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland.
Family and friends will gather at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Saturday
from 10:30 until the time of the service at 1:30 pm.
A memorial fund is being established in his memory for First Christian Reformed Church and
the Oostburg Christian School Athletic Fund.
