Marlyse J. VanStelle, 86, of Oostburg, died peacefully while surrounded by her family on
Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.
Marlyse was born on July 16, 1932, the daughter of the late Melvin and Dina (Dirkse) Theune.
Marlyse graduated from Oostburg High School in 1950. On July 24, 1982 she married Matthew
VanStelle in Oostburg. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2004. Marlyse worked as a lab
technician at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital for over 40 years before her retirement in 1992.
Marlyse was a lifelong member at Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg and the
Rebekah Society. She was also a Pine Haven Volunteer. Marlyse enjoyed crafts, ceramics,
knitting, reading, concerts, cooking, traveling and collecting plates and figurines.
She is survived by three step-daughters, Jean (Roger) Karsten of Grand Rapids, MI, Cheryl
(Peter) Hill of Guston, KY, and Linda (Carl) Roethel of Oostburg; one step-son, Ken (Christy)
VanStelle of Diamond Head, MS ; a step-son-in-law, John DeMaster of Fort Myers, FL; 16 step-
grandchildren; 36 step great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Delmar) Hanson; and a
dear nephew, James (Debbie) Hertel.
Marlyse was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Eugene Theune; and a step
daughter, Ruth Ann DeMaster.
A funeral to celebrate Marlyse’ life will take place at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at
Bethel OPC in Oostburg with the Rev. David Veldhorst officiating. Burial will take place at
Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson.
Family and friends will gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday from 5-7 pm,
and on Saturday, at church, from 8:30 am until the time of the service at 9:30 am.

A memorial fund is being established in her memory for Oostburg Christian School and
Sheboygan Christian School.
