Sharon Lee Schmitz, 70, of Random Lake, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2019,
at her home surrounded by her family.
Sharon was born on November 9, 1948, in Marshfield, WI to Roger and Grace (Hertz) Staffeil.
She was a 1966 graduate of Colby High school. Following high school, she graduated from
Taylor County Teachers College on June 7, 1968. On September 22, 1973, Sharon married the
love of her life, Thomas Schmitz at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, WI. Sharon taught for the
Random Lake School District until her retirement in 2008.
Sharon was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Random Lake, where she served
on the consistory and taught Sunday school. Sharon enjoyed baking, gardening, cross country
skiing, biking, camping, traveling, day trips to the casino, and spending time up north at the
Schmitz family cabin in Laona, WI. Sharon loved spending time with her family, especially her
grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spoiling and devoted countless hours to.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Tom; daughter, Sarah (Jon DeSmidt) Schmitz; son, Todd
(Kristin) Schmitz; four grandchildren, Allison, Benjamin, Tyler, and Hope; three sisters, Cheryl
(Kenny) Barrick, Carol (Herb) Chapman, and Diane (Terry) Slowiak; three brothers, Jim (Cheri)
Staffeil, Jeff (Lisa) Staffeil, and Kevin Staffeil; and two brothers-in-law, Jim (Pat) Schmitz, and
Bob (Pat) Schmitz. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Morgan; parents-in-law,
Harvey and Marie Schmitz; and one sister-in-law, Nancy Schmitz.
A memorial service to celebrate Sharon's life will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 4 pm
at St. John UCC in Random Lake with Rev. Ann Utke officiating. A private inurnment will take
place at Union Cemetery in Random Lake.
Relatives and friends may greet the family at St. John's UCC in Random Lake on Saturday,
February 9, 2019 from 1 pm until the time of service at 4 pm.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in her name for the Creutzfeldt Jakob
Disease Foundation and St. John's UCC in Random Lake.
