Efforts by Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin to establish a major medical campus in Sheboygan cleared another hurdle on Monday night. The Sheboygan Common Council approved zoning changes that had been requested by Froedtert in order to build on 26 acres of land on the northeast corner of Saemann Avenue and Taylor Drive.
A public hearing on the proposals saw several residents express their concerns about such issues as the changing view caused by taller buildings and the displacement of wildlife on the now-vacant land. City Development Director Chad Pelishek assured those concerned that the issues could be addressed through conditional use permits.
When time came for the Council to vote on the six proposed changes, alder Barb Felde, admitting to being both a well-know “tree hugger” on the Council – and a patient at Froedtert – said that she knows that Froedtert also believes in green spaces, and so it would be “with a heavy heart” that she would approve the changes knowing that nature will still be respected.
While the changes were a key to the development going forward, it was only one hurdle. The land in question is still owned by the Sheboygan Area School District with an agreement to sell to Froedtert, which said that many steps still remain in the process of finalizing plans.
