Valentine’s Day may have passed, but those red hearts are reminders that February is Heart Month. The American Red Cross would like to add that it’s a good month to make a donation that could save lives.
That organization notes that although only about 3 in 100 persons choose to donate blood, one in 7 patients entering a hospital will need a transfusion. Add seasonal illnesses and dangerous weather to the mix and the result can be shortages of blood and platelets on hospital shelves.
Red Cross officials are hoping to up the number of donors by offering some incentives during Heart Month, including a $10 Amazon gift card through e-mail for those who donate. They’ll also enter donors into a drawing that will award one trip for two persons to Clearwater Beach, Florida, where that dangerous weather can be left far behind.
You can donate as early as tomorrow between 11 and 5 at Amore’ Banquet Hall on Mill Street in Plymouth, or on the next two Fridays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Sheboygan Trades and Labor Hall at 11th and Wisconsin Avenue. Get more information online at RedCrossBlood.org.
