An attempt to take a wanted person into custody on Tuesday morning ended in a multi-vehicle accident with life-threatening injuries.
Officials with the Sheboygan Police Department said they spotted a known wanted person traveling in a vehicle shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday and conducted a high-risk traffic stop because the suspect was being sought on a felony violation. After pulling over the vehicle near 13th and North Avenue the driver surrendered, but the passenger – who was wanted by police – refused to exit the vehicle and instead got into the driver’s seat and fled at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was southbound on North 10th Street when it blew the stop sign at Geele Avenue and collided with an eastbound vehicle at the intersection. That second vehicle then struck a third vehicle that was northbound on 10th Street, while the suspect’s vehicle continued on, striking one home on North 10th before coming to rest against a second home.
The Sheboygan Fire Department was called to extricate the 37-year-old suspect from his vehicle and was transported to the hospital for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was also extricated and transported for hospital treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the third vehicle did not report any injuries to responding officers.
The intersection of 10th and Geele had to be closed for several hours for accident reconstruction, and the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in the investigation of the sequence of events that led to the crash.
