It’s been about a month since we’ve had to deal with severe winter weather. Nature now appears ready to make up for at least some lost ground as a large storm passes through with a variety of precipitation…all of it wet.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 9 p.m, and expects precipitation to begin no later than 10 tonight, ending at noon on Thursday. What exactly that means comes down to location. At the Sheboygan County Airport – essentially the center of the county – there could be brief freezing rain or sleet before snow takes over by 11, continuing overnight at rates near an inch per hour at times. By sunup on Thursday that could mean 6 inches of wet, heavy snow, then a little more rain, freezing rain and sleet to top it off.
In the southeast corner – around Cedar Grove – all snow looks likely for about 12 hours beginning at 8 or 9 tonight, then rain and sleet falling on top of the 5 inches of snow from overnight.
In the far northwest corner – near the Sheboygan Marsh – it appears mostly snow will fall between 9 p.m. and 11 a.m. with amounts approaching 7 inches before a topping of freezing rain in the later afternoon.
If there’s one plus, it appears temperatures will remain just at or above freezing, which may be better for travel on one hand…but on the other hand every shovel full will demand lots of work to move.
