A Sheboygan man was able to escape a fire in his home on Thursday morning, but was unable to locate his wife and dog who perished in the blaze.
Sheboygan Fire Chief Eric Montellano reported receiving the 911 call from a passerby just after 7:30 a.m. reporting a porch fire at the home just south of Alabama Avenue on South 17th Street. As Battalion 18 responded, they could see heavy smoke from several blocks away and were advised, en route, that two occupants were in the home, and additional units were requested.
Sheboygan Police Officers arrived on the scene first and told the SFD that there was heavy fire on the first floor in the front of the two-story home.
A rescue unit arrived and immediately began a search while another crew began extinguishing the fire. During the search an adult male who’d escaped through a back door met fire crews outside, telling them that he’d been on the second floor and was alerted by a smoke alarm, but couldn’t locate his wife who was still inside along with their dog. He was treated at the scene and transported for hospital treatment.
Search crews found both the wife and dog inside the building on the first floor where the fire was initially reported, but both were already deceased.
There were no injuries sustained by responders and the fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 damage, remains under investigation. The fire required 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 3 ambulances and 4 Chief Response Vehicles from the Sheboygan Fire Department, which was assisted by units from the Kohler, Town of Sheboygan and Town of Wilson Fire Departments, as well as the Sheboygan County Medical Examiner.
