WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU-WRN) — Week two of the Darrell Brooks Jr homicide trial is underway in Waukesha.
Brooks, who is representing himself after firing his attorneys just before the proceedings started, opened the week by apologizing to the court for a series of outbursts in the first week.
Brooks told the court that he wanted to “stand up as a man” and apologize, saying he should carry himself better.
Judge Jennifer Dorow said she appreciated the gesture before the Jury was brought in to begin another day of testimony.
Brooks also showed up to court on Monday wearing a suit and tie. During the first week, he was often seen in his jail jumpsuit.
He opened the day by questioning Detective Thomas Casey, which featured an odd exchange where Brooks claimed he does not identify by the name Darrell Brooks, nor does he know anyone by that name.
The court then noted his objection. It’s not the first time that Brooks has questioned his name. He told the judge that he did not recognize his name on court documents in the days leading up to the trial, just before she approved his request to represent himself.
The trial is scheduled to last through the end of the month.
