Someone is trying to scare Fond du Lac County residents into paying up to avoid an arrest, and Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says don’t believe it.
Several residents have reported getting calls from a person claiming to be “Deputy Morris” of the Fond du Lac Sheriff’s Office, telling the people that they have a warrant, and then requesting they pay that warrant through non-governmental services.
The Sheriff says that there is no “Deputy Morris” and they are trying to identify the scammer. Chances are, he says, the caller is not from the U.S. and it will be difficult to locate them.
Those who receive such a call should hang up immediately, and if money was sent, people should notify local law enforcement as soon as possible so they can assist in stopping the payment and recover the money.
Sheriff Waldschmidt also noted that they don’t call people with warrants, but instead send deputies to locate them and take them into custody.
He also said that if you ever question the authenticity of a law enforcement officer who’s calling in regards to an investigation or follow-up, politely ask for their name and agency and tell them you’ll hang up and call them back to be sure the call is legitimate.
