WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin has added her name to a resolution calling for the release of WNBA star Brittany Griner, who the US has considered wrongfully detained in Russia.
In a statement Baldwin said the Phoenix Mercury F “Needs to be released, she should be free to come home to her family. This Senate Resolution has earned the support of Democrats and Republicans because we are standing together in support of Brittney being free and returning home to her family.”
Griner has been detained in Russia since early February when officials accused her of having illegal hash oil in her luggage. She was arrested at the airport in Moscow as she was leaving her Russian professional team to return to the US.
In addition to Baldwin other Democrats who have supported the resolution include Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusets, and Cory Booker of New Jersey. Texas Republicans Ted Cruz and John Cornyn have also signed on.
Cruz and Cornyn represent the state where Griner played collegiately at Baylor University in Waco. Arizona’s Senate delegation, which represents the area where she plays professionally, has also signed on.
