WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — Despite opposition from many Republicans, a bill to spend $28 million for increased oversite and distribution of baby formula has passed in the House.
Just 12 Republicans voted yes on the bill, and none of those ayes came from members of the Wisconsin GOP delegation.
Many Republicans argued that the spending would not lead to quick relief for families struggling to find the formula. While Democrats said the funding would allow for more inspections, thereby allowing products to get to consumers more quickly.
All eight Wisconsin Congressional Reps did vote yes on a bill that would allow WIC checks to be used to purchase more types of formula. The WIC program relies heavily on formulas made by Abbot Labs, which has shut down productions after four infants who were given formula from the plant developed bacterial infections.
