Home fire sprinklers aren’t part of our current construction codes, but the Sheboygan Fire Department is on record urging that they be included.
SFD battalion Chief of Inspection and Prevention Nicholas Noster sent an editorial letter on Wednesday urging “residents and local decision makers to educate themselves on how home fire sprinklers can protect our city’s future generations and our first responders”, and stating that “every new home built in our community should be protected with home fire sprinklers.”
Noster said the Sheboygan Fire Department is joining a nationwide awareness campaign about the safety systems during Home Fire Sprinkler Week May 15-21.
Noster calls the notion that new homes don’t burn a “stubborn myth”, saying that fire in an unprotected home can become deadly in two minutes or less, and that today’s home fires burn faster than ever and become deadly more quickly. But, he said, the home fire sprinkler system can help end the home fire problem.
And with or without a sprinkler system, Noster reminds people to ensure they have working and tested smoke detectors installed in order to save lives.
