A “Good Samaritan” is being credited with saving a Kewaunee County woman from a burning vehicle early Tuesday morning.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig said that the 21-year-old woman was northbound on State Highway 42 north of Irish Road in the Township of Two Creeks when her SUV left the roadway and entered the east ditch, striking a culvert, sending the vehicle airborne into a barn where it caught fire.
Shortly after hearing the crash a 41-year-old Manitowoc County man quickly ran towards the scene, unbuckled the driver’s seatbelt and removed her from the burning vehicle.
Responding Fire Departments were able to quickly extinguish the fire which had spread from the vehicle to the barn.
The operator was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and was charged with her first OWI offense.
Sheriff Hartwig credited the Good Samaritan’s “selfless act and a willingness to intervene” with preventing further injury to the woman.
